All it took was a single YouTube video for Kim Pia to get hooked on pole dancing.
“I had never seen it anything like it!” says Kim. “After my friend posted that video on Facebook, I was mesmerized. I ended up spending two hours in this pole dancing YouTube vortex…I was so moved by how graceful, sexy and strong pole dancing was.”
Kim, who has danced throughout her life, had been looking for adult dance classes after graduating from college but hadn’t found the right fit. Once she discovered pole, she immediately searched for local studios and found iCandy. Since then she’s been coming to the studio for almost a year, attending classes 3 to 4 times a week.
“It’s really brought me back to life, in terms of dancing,” says Kim. “This is the most I’ve danced in years. It’s so great to be here with people who actually want to learn to move and dance.”
Her two favorite classes are Floorwork because she loves moving around the pole, and Intermediate because she loves building strength while trying and being challenged by new tricks. That doesn’t surprise Melina, who teaches a lot of Kim’s classes.
“Kim is fearless,” says Melina. “She is always willing to try whatever I throw at her, no matter how daunting it might seem. She has a great sense of musicality and it’s always a pleasure to have her in class.”
Like many students, one of Kim’s favorite parts about iCandy is the friendly, non-judgmental atmosphere.
“I’ve never come to a place as consistently as I come here,” says Kim. “This is the first place I’ve come and actually wanted to be part of the community. It doesn’t matter if someone’s better or worse than you. It’s such a welcome environment.”
Kim hopes to perform in the next iCandy showcase in October, so be on the lookout for this dancer’s pole performance debut!
